Finding Motivation in Simple Things

October 12, 2009 by Omar

Today was such a dreary day that I had a really hard time finding the motivation to get my work done. And  Motivationseeing that I work from home makes it even more challenging to find that little spark to get me going.

The thing with finding motivation is that you need to be proactive. Its more about creating motivation than finding it.

Finding Simple Things to Motivate You

The first thing you need to do is to create an environment that is designed to promote motivation. You need to have a clutter-free work area (not like my desk), a nice comfy chair, your computer monitor at a comfortable height. Oh, and a window with a view of the woods – well, not really, but I am lucky enough to have one.

I mean a person has got to be comfy or you’ll lose motivation really quickly. Who wants to be worried about carpal tunnel and back aches while trying to get motivated?

So take a step back and ask yourself this question…

How much would my attitude change if I worked in an area that I actually enjoy spending time in?

Where Can I  Find Motivation

Everyone has different things that motivate them. What works for you may not work well for me. So you have to take the first step and think about the things that get you excited and motivates you.

For me, a kiss from my wife, or a smile on my sons’ faces does the trick quite well.

At other times, a small snack is sufficient. Sometimes, its trying to wrap things up to see Oprah. I tell you, my wife got me addicted to that show – blame her for all the Oprah references.

The point is, you need to give yourself something to work towards. When you find these small tokens, sprinkle them throughout your day. As you finish one milestone, use a token. Move on to the other milestone, then another token. You get the picture.

So that’s it. No ground breaking discoveries here. Just keep it simple. Find small things to motivate you and use them to your advantage.

Now it’s your turn. What little things do you use to motivate you and help you to get through your day?

A great question. I am motivated to be able to look back at the end of the day and feel a sense of achievement.
