Build Willpower – 5 Strategies To Get You Going in the Right Direction
October 1, 2009 by Omar
It is important to realize that we are not born with willpower.
Willpower is one of those things that you have to work at and nurture for it to grow. Once we build our willpower, it will provide us with an invaluable tool to help us in achieving our goals and dreams.
Here are 5 strategies you can use to build willpower…
1. Commitment
To reach your goals you have to be committed to them. If you are not fully committed to what you want to accomplish, you will never be able to develop the willpower necessary to see things through.
Just having the desire to succeed will not guarantee that you will succeed. Act on that desire by making a firm commitment, and you will be well on your way.
TIP: Desire alone will not guarantee accomplishment
2. No Second Thoughts
To be successful in achieving your goals, do not second guess yourself. Put aside any second thoughts, excuses, or doubts. Ask yourself, “is this something that I truly want, and am I willing to see it through to the end?” If your answer is yes, then act on it.
3. Consistency
Some of us have the willpower to follow through on a project, a task, or trying to break a bad habit for a period of time. And that is a good thing. However, to really build willpower, you need to be consistent for the long-term.
Keep working at your goal all day, everyday, without excuses and without exception. It will all get better as you continue to build your willpower.
TIP: You can apply this strategy to any goal you are trying to accomplish.
4. Perseverance
Definition: Perseverance – steady persistence in adhering to a course of action, a belief, or a purpose.
To build willpower you need perseverance. This is the time to dig deep and call on your inner strength. You know, that extra push that you need sometimes to get you through a difficult situation.
The good news – you have made a commitment to start on a journey to greater willpower and to accomplish the goals you have set for yourself. You should be congratulated for that big step!
The bad news – yes, you will have many days filled with success and accomplishment, but there will also be days that you will question yourself, you will feel frustrated, and not much of a success at all. These are the days that you need perseverance to give you the strength to get back on the road and forge ahead.
And in case you are wondering, we all have inner strength. In fact, I bet you have used it on more than one occasion.
TIP: Trust in your inner strength and it will guide you through the rough times.
As you build willpower it is important to have a support system.
I will admit that building your willpower to accomplish your goals can be an overwhelming challenge. This is why support is necessary.
Tell your spouse what you are trying to accomplish. Share your goals with a friend you trust. Let your family know what you are doing. That way, when you fall, you will have someone to hold your hand and help you to get back up.
TIP: Your support system will help you through the hard times. They will also celebrate your successes with you.
Be sure to use these five strategies to help you as you work on building your willpower.
To Your Success,
